Overview

The Upper Dolpo Trek is one of Nepal’s most remote and breathtaking trekking adventures, offering an extraordinary journey through the high-altitude trans-Himalayan landscapes of western Nepal. Known for its ancient Tibetan-influenced culture, hidden monasteries, and pristine natural beauty, Upper Dolpo is often called the “Forbidden Kingdom” due to its restricted access and untouched landscapes.

The trek begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, followed by another flight to Juphal, the gateway to Upper Dolpo. The route passes through traditional villages, high desert valleys, and rugged mountains, including settlements like Shey Gompa, Ringmo, Phoksundo, and Dunai, where trekkers experience authentic Tibetan-Buddhist culture. Phoksundo Lake, Nepal’s deepest lake, is a major highlight with its turquoise waters and surrounding cliffs.

Upper Dolpo is a restricted area, requiring a special trekking permit, which is arranged by I Global Travel & Tourism. The trek typically takes 18–22 days, making it suitable for trekkers with high fitness levels and prior high-altitude trekking experience. Along the route, trekkers witness ancient monasteries, mani walls, prayer flags, and centuries-old Tibetan architecture, combined with breathtaking landscapes of snow-capped peaks, high passes, and desert-like valleys.

The best seasons for the trek are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), when the weather is stable, skies are clear, and mountain views are spectacular. The Upper Dolpo Trek offers a unique combination of adventure, cultural immersion, and natural beauty, allowing trekkers to explore one of Nepal’s most isolated regions while experiencing the warm hospitality of local Dolpo communities.

In conclusion, the Upper Dolpo Trek is a journey into Nepal’s hidden Himalayan treasures, combining high-altitude adventure, cultural exploration, and pristine natural landscapes. With the support of I Global Travel & Tourism, trekkers can safely navigate this remote region, enjoying one of the most authentic and awe-inspiring trekking experiences in the world.
